Making your own Christmas wreath is a fun way to start the festivities.
Traditionally, an Advent wreath is made with evergreen fir branches. To add variety to our wreath, we used different coloured flowers and plants that dry well. Such as red preserved hydrangea, green amaranthus and asparagus fern. You can also easily spray flowers to change their colour as we did for the fern. To avoid a possible fire hazard, make sure that the candles do not burn down too far. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make a Christmas wreath, unique to you.
Step 1
Assemble your ingredients and equipment:
1 x straw-based wreath
4 x small red preserved hydrangea
8-10 branches green amaranthus
2-3 asparagus fern (painted icy blue)
4 x candles in different shapes and colours
4 x small metal candle spikes
4 x ribbons
4m metal wire
10 x metal tacks
1 x pair of scissors
1 x small pliers
Step 2
Start off with the base wreath and tie the front end of the metal wire to the wreath. Now, add the branches and flower stems to the wreath step by step. Make sure you tighten the metal wire so that the arrangement does not fall apart later.
If you use less flexible branches, you can also attach them to the wreath with small metal clips. We used green in different shades and added coloured highlights with the red dried hydrangea. We also used long and short branches to give it more variety in shapes.
Step 3
Work your design all the way around the wreath until the straw-base is no longer visible. Now you can start adding some ribbon tied into bows to the candle holders before you place them on the wreath. We love the mix of bright red with yellow striped candles.
Step 4
At the end, top it off with the blue asparagus fern. It’s bright, it’s colourful, and it will bring joy to your table. Christmas is the perfect time to go a little overboard with your decoration!
