Bread is a staple in cuisines across the world, with many different countries, continents and cultures all having their own unique take on the classic carb. From focaccia to the humble baguette, we’ve investigated search volumes from over 200 kinds of bread to see which varieties are favoured most around the world…

The Top 3 by country
Australia and China are big fans of scones, with the Scottish delicacy cracking the top 3 for both countries. In the UK, Banana bread, scones and crackers are the UK’s top choices. Bagels are the first choice in the US, with the rounded treat an integral part of the nation’s eating habits. French bread is popular in Egypt, with this being the second most searched for variety in the country.
The most searched for breads worldwide
Banana bread came out on top, with a surge in searches towards the start of the first lockdown last year. Focaccia is flying the flag for Italy, with over 9 million searches and coming in at a very respectable 4th place. The South American arepa also fared well, even finishing above the traditional baguette.
Charting the rise of the world’s most popular bread
With banana bread officially coming out on top, we’ve analysed the term closely since January 2020 to chart its meteoric rise to the top.
With much of the world in lockdown, search volume surged in February as people turned to the art of banana bread making to pass the time. It’s clear that this breads reign at the top could soon be over though, with search volume steadily falling since June of last year.
Methodology
We gathered a list of over 200 kinds of bread and ran them through Google’s keyword planner tool. From this, we were able to get search volumes for our selected countries over the course of the past year.
